Physical Appearance
Shell: The upper shell (carapace) is smooth and olive-green, brown, or black, often featuring faint yellow or red lines. The lower shell is bright red or orange with a distinct dark, web-like or butterfly design.
Skin: Dark brown or black skin with bright yellow and red stripes on the neck, legs, and head.
Size: Females are larger, growing up to 10 inches (25 cm) long, while males reach up to 6 inches (15 cm) and have longer front claws and thicker tails.
Habitat and Behavior
Environment: They live in slow-moving, shallow freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, marshes, and streams with muddy bottoms and lots of aquatic plants.
Basking: They are cold-blooded (ectotherms) and spend hours basking on logs or rocks in groups to warm up their bodies.
Diet: They are omnivores that eat aquatic insects, snails, tadpoles, small fish, algae, and aquatic plants.
Winter Survival
Brumation: In winter, adult turtles sink to the bottom of ponds and enter the mud to brumate (reptilian hibernation). They survive low-oxygen conditions by absorbing oxygen directly through their skin and cloaca. Hatchlings often stay safely tucked inside their underground nests, tolerating freezing temperatures through unique physiological adaptations.
